Company History
The company was founded in 1960 by Japanese entrepreneur Shintaro Tsuji and initially had a different name – Yamanashi Silk Company. The business was engaged in the production of silk products, and in 1962 it expanded to the production of rubber sandals with floral designs.
Tsuji noticed that a cute design on the product itself significantly increased its popularity and sales, so he began hiring animators to create new characters for the products. In 1973, the company changed its name to “Sanrio,” and its image was finally established.
